The Polish exam: how long from registering to holding the certificate
The office needs a document, not a result — and those are two different dates.
Two calendars
The state exam
- A few sittings a year, with dates announced by the Commission — one calendar for the whole country.
- Registration opens no earlier than two months before the sitting.
- Places are limited: order of application and payment on time decide, and the form closes when the places run out.
telc
- Each licensed centre sets its own dates — there are as many calendars as there are centres.
- Registration usually closes 1–2 months before the date, and payment follows within days of confirmation.
- Some centres run the exam on request: for a group, or even for one person, at their own price. Places can be limited here too.

What the waiting is made of, on the state exam
- 1
The registration window — opens at most two months before the sitting
- 2
The sitting — two days, written and oral
- 3
Marking and verification — usually three to four months; it takes that long because every centre's papers are marked a second time
- 4
Issuing the certificate — within 30 days of the protocol with the final results
Add those four together and half a year from registering to holding the document stops being an anecdote. It is not a promised turnaround, only the sum of steps.
On telc the result comes 4–6 weeks after the exam — telc's own figure — and the centre then has up to two weeks to hand over the certificate. The date of the exam itself is set by the centre you register with.
What follows if you have a deadline
For a resident-card application both certificates are equal — but the office is waiting for a document, not a result. If your case is sitting there waiting for proof of language, the shorter cycle is telc's.
If you have no deadline, that difference stops deciding and what is left is the pass rule — which is gentler or harsher depending on how uneven your Polish is.
Compare the two examsThis is what your result looks like
When the sitting falls is not up to you. Whether you walk into it knowing how many points you are short is.
Do not wait for a sitting to find out
One part takes twenty minutes and already says how many points you are short. Then you know how many months are left to close the gap.
The figures come from the Commission's and the examination centres' own pages; as of September 2026. Check the dates of the next sittings at the source — the Commission announces them year by year.
