How to describe a picture in the telc Polish B1/B2 exam: a speaking plan

Describing a picture opens the first part of the telc speaking exam. Say what you see, how you interpret the situation, and what you think about it. Do not invent details the image cannot show.

What is the picture task like?

In the first speaking part, you receive an image linked to the conversation topic and speak about it without prior preparation. The examiner then asks about your experience and opinions on that topic. The whole first part lasts about two minutes per candidate, so the picture description leads into a conversation.

telc criteria look at whether you convey the main information, mention details, and comment on the situation. At B2 the description should be clearer and more detailed; you do not need to name every object in the frame.

A simple order: overview, details, inference, opinion

Start with one sentence about the place or general scene. Choose two or three visible details: people, what they are doing, objects, or how they relate. Carefully suggest a possible reason or purpose, then comment on the topic and connect it to your experience.

  • Overview: „Na zdjęciu widać …”.
  • Details: „Na pierwszym planie …, a w tle …”.
  • Inference: „Być może …”, „Wygląda na to, że …”.
  • Comment: „Moim zdaniem …, ponieważ …”.
  • Experience: „Miałem podobną sytuację, kiedy …”.

What if you forget a word?

Do not stop for one noun. Describe the object by its purpose or appearance, use a simpler synonym, or move to another visible detail. If you are unsure, mark it as a guess: „Nie wiem dokładnie, ale możliwe, że…”. This keeps an inference from sounding like a fact.

Do not invent a story the picture cannot support. You may suggest what happened before or what might happen next, but make clear that it is your interpretation.

How to practise before the exam

Choose any picture and record a one-minute answer without preparation. Check that you included an overview, a few concrete details, an inference, and a comment. On your second try, focus on linking words such as „ponieważ”, „natomiast”, and „dlatego”. Practise different topics instead of memorising one description.

Complete practice task: picture description

This is an original practice task in the telc format, not a prompt published by telc. The sample answer is in Polish.

Task in Polish

A family around a holiday dinner table; one person is serving a dish, with a Christmas tree and family photos in the background.

W centrum kobieta podaje półmisek z jedzeniem.

Common questions about the telc picture task

How long is the telc picture description?

The official format gives about two minutes per candidate for the first speaking part as a whole. It includes describing the image and discussing experience and opinions, not just a monologue about the picture.

Is the picture description different at B1 and B2?

The task format is shared, but the B2 criteria expect a clearer, more detailed description and comment. At both levels, stick to what is visible and develop your answer in your own words.

Can I guess what is happening in the picture?

Yes, if you signal that it is an inference, for example with „Być może…” or „Wygląda na to…”. Do not state something as certain when the image does not show it.
