How to write an email for the telc Polish B1 exam: structure and example

In the writing section of telc Język polski B1·B2, you choose one of two prompts. Develop all three points and match your tone to the reader.

What do you have to write?

The official telc practice test allows 30 minutes for writing. Choose task A or B and write one email. In its sample, task A is addressed to a school website editor; task B is for a cousin. The recipient and situation tell you which register to use.

Each prompt has three points to include. You may arrange them in any order, but develop each one instead of mentioning it in a single word.

How to plan your 30 minutes

Read both prompts and choose the one you can answer with specific ideas. Mark the three points, identify the reader, and decide whether the tone should be formal or personal. Leave time for a short plan, writing, and a final check.

  • Plan: add one or two details to each point.
  • Opening: explain why you are contacting the reader.
  • Main section: answer every point, ideally in separate paragraphs.
  • Closing: choose a sign-off that fits your relationship.
  • Check: greetings, verb forms, endings, and commas.

Formal email or personal message

For an institution or someone you do not know, use a formal greeting such as „Szanowny Panie” or „Szanowna Pani”, and close with „Z poważaniem”. To a cousin, „Cześć” and „Pozdrawiam” or „Do zobaczenia” are suitable. Keep the register consistent from opening to sign-off.

Use a clear layout in either version. You do not need a subject line unless the prompt asks for one; answering the three points is the priority.

How is the email assessed?

telc writing criteria assess task completion, organisation, accuracy, and vocabulary separately. First make sure your message covers the task and is easy to follow, then check individual language choices. A correct but incomplete email does not fulfil the whole prompt.

Complete practice task: e-mail

Full sample answer in Polish

Cześć, Ewo!

Bardzo się cieszę, że przyjeżdżasz do mnie w przyszły weekend. W sobotę możemy pojechać rowerami nad jezioro, a potem zjeść obiad w małej restauracji w centrum. W niedzielę pokażę ci stary rynek i muzeum miejskie.

Moja miejscowość jest niewielka, więc łatwo wszędzie dojść pieszo. Jednocześnie mamy tu dużo zieleni i dobry dojazd pociągiem do większego miasta.

Czy możesz przywieźć wygodne buty sportowe? Będziemy sporo chodzić, a twoje są podobno najlepsze na długie spacery.

Daj znać, o której przyjedziesz. Do zobaczenia!

Pozdrawiam, Marek
