Grammar in the Polish state exam at B1: the eight tasks on every paper

Published 3 October 2026

The grammar block ("Poprawność gramatyczna") of the Polish state exam at B1 looks the same on all 14 papers from the 2021–2024 sittings: eight tasks in the same order, 55 gaps, 30 points and 45 minutes. The sentences change, the tasks do not — so you know in advance what you will be doing.

In short

  • Eight tasks in a fixed order: declension, conjunctions, comparison, tenses, asking about part of a sentence, rewriting, aspect and mood, prepositions.
  • 55 gaps for 30 points, and the bar is 15. Tasks 1, 4, 6 and 7 carry 20 of the 30 points.
  • The paper gives the block 45 minutes — about 49 seconds a gap.

What is in the B1 grammar block?

On every one of the 14 B1 papers in the library the block has the same tasks, in the same order, with the same number of gaps and points. The instruction itself usually names the topic in brackets — "(stopniowanie przymiotników i przysłówków)", comparison of adjectives and adverbs, for instance.

The eight tasks of the B1 grammar block, their form, gaps and points — the same on 14 papers from the 2021–2024 sittings.

The tasks take three forms. In some you pick the correct form out of three in brackets. In some you fill sentences with words from a box that has one word too many. In the rest you write the form yourself — with no hint.

What do you do in each task?

The examples in the table are ours, not from the papers — they show the form of a task, not its content. They are in Polish, as in the exam.

No.TaskExample (ours)
1Declension of nouns, adjectives and pronouns — pick the formRozmawiałam wczoraj z (nasz nowy sąsiad / naszym nowym sąsiadem / naszego nowego sąsiada). → naszym nowym sąsiadem
2Conjunctions — words from a boxZostałam w domu, ___ bolała mnie głowa. [bo / więc / ale] → bo
3Comparison of adjectives and adverbs — pick the formTen pokój jest (większy / bardziej duży / największy) od kuchni. → większy
4Tenses — write the form of the verb in brackets (present and past on 8 papers, present and future on 6)Jutro (pójść) ___ do lekarza. → pójdę
5Ask about the underlined part of a sentence (in capitals here) — write the questionMarta pojechała do Gdańska POCIĄGIEM. → Czym Marta pojechała do Gdańska?
6Rewrite a sentence with the word in brackets, keeping its meaning — write the whole sentenceKupiłam ten rower dwa lata temu. (mam) → Mam ten rower od dwóch lat.
7Aspect and mood — pick the formGdybym miała więcej czasu, (pojechałabym / pojechałam / pojadę) w góry. → pojechałabym
8Prepositions — words from a box (on 11 papers) or a choice in brackets (on 3)Czekam ___ autobus już dwadzieścia minut. [na / do / po] → na

Where are the points?

At B1 you need at least 50% in every part — 15 of the 30 grammar points, whatever your reading or listening score. Tasks 1, 4, 6 and 7 together carry 20 points, more than the whole bar.

Almost every gap is worth half a point. Task 6 is the exception: each rewritten sentence earns a whole point, because you write it from start to finish. Five sentences, five points — the most per gap in the block.

The paper prints each task's points beside it. The figures above are what all 14 papers print, not a rule of the Commission's — check them on your own paper.

How much time do you have?

The paper prints it above the block: 45 minutes. For 55 gaps that is about 49 seconds each. The choice tasks go quickly; keep more time for tasks 5 and 6, where you write a whole question or a whole sentence.

How to practise it?

  • Practise by task, not by textbook chapter: the order is fixed, so after a few papers you know which task costs you points.
  • Practise rewriting (task 6) on its own. It pays the most per gap and has no hint in brackets.
  • Where you write the form yourself, write carefully: the published answers give exact forms, and one ending changes the case.
  • Do the block against the clock — 45 minutes — to know whether you reach task 6.

The other parts of the exam are on state exam tasks and state exam B1. Why one part below its bar decides the whole exam is in one part below the bar.
