How to write a review in Polish: recenzja and opinia — a model for the exam
Published 29 October 2026
A review (recenzja) in the exam is a reasoned opinion of a film, a book, a programme or a place. You say what it is, briefly what it is about — without giving the ending away — then what you liked and what you did not, each with a reason, and end with a rating and a recommendation. An opinia of a hotel or a farm stay has the same shape.
In short
- Five parts: a title, what it is, what it is about, strengths and weaknesses with reasons, rating and recommendation.
- The summary takes two or three sentences; the rest is your judgement.
- In the state exam: at B1 — on 4 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 140–175 words; at B2 — on 4 of the 9 papers in the library, as the short or the long text, 150–200 words.
The regulation notes at B1 that it means expressing an opinion, of a film or a book for instance, not a review as a journalistic genre. So the papers say "opinia" or "recenzja": of a film, a series, a book, an entertainment show, a farm stay, a pet hotel.
When does this form come up in the exam?
- At B1 — on 4 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 140–175 words
- At B2 — on 4 of the 9 papers in the library, as the short or the long text, 150–200 words
In the state exam's writing part you write two texts — a short one and a long one — from one of three sets to choose from, so you never have to pick this form. The paper prints three criteria for the whole part: task, range and accuracy — 30 points at B1 and 40 at B2 for both texts together. How that splits between the texts, the Commission does not publish. The whole writing part is described on writing.
How do you write a recenzja, step by step?
- A title that says what you are judging and how.
- Opening: what it is — a film, a book, a place — its genre, where it can be seen.
- What it is about: two or three sentences, no ending.
- Strengths and weaknesses: the acting, the plot, the music, the service, the prices — each with a reason.
- Rating and recommendation: who you would recommend it to, or why not.

A model film review (143 words)
„Sprzedam dom z ogrodem” — film, który warto zobaczyć
Niedawno obejrzałam w kinie polski film „Sprzedam dom z ogrodem”.
Zachwyciły mnie też zdjęcia: jezioro rano, we mgle, to najpiękniejsze sceny filmu. Słabą stroną jest początek — przez pierwsze dwadzieścia minut niewiele się dzieje i trochę się nudziłam.
Mimo to polecam ten film każdemu, kto lubi spokojne kino o relacjach w rodzinie. Po seansie od razu zadzwoniłam do mojej siostry. Moja ocena: osiem na dziesięć.
The summary is three sentences, the pluses and the minus have their reasons, and the recommendation says who will like it. The film and the text are made up, not from a paper.
