How to write a charakterystyka in Polish: a character sketch for B1 and B2

Published 29 October 2026

A charakterystyka (character sketch) presents a person: who they are to you, what they look like (briefly), what they are like and — above all — how you can tell. Every trait comes with an example from that person's life. You end with your own view. That is the difference from a description of a person, which stops at appearance.

In short

  • Five parts: who it is, looks in two sentences, traits with examples, interests, your view.
  • Every trait with proof: not "jest uczynna", but "jest uczynna — robi zakupy dla sąsiada".
  • In the state exam: at B1 — on 5 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 160–175 words; at B2 — on 2 of the 9 papers in the library, as the short text, 150 words.

At B1 the regulation lists a "character sketch of a person"; at B2 a character sketch that may be of a person, but also of a community or parts of reality. On the papers in the library it is always a person: a family member, an athlete, a teacher, someone you admire.

When does this form come up in the exam?

  • At B1 — on 5 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 160–175 words
  • At B2 — on 2 of the 9 papers in the library, as the short text, 150 words

In the state exam's writing part you write two texts — a short one and a long one — from one of three sets to choose from, so you never have to pick this form. The paper prints three criteria for the whole part: task, range and accuracy — 30 points at B1 and 40 at B2 for both texts together. How that splits between the texts, the Commission does not publish. The whole writing part is described on writing.

How do you write a charakterystyka, step by step?

  1. Opening: who the person is and how you know them.
  2. Looks: two or three sentences, no more — this is not a description.
  3. Character: two or three traits, each with an example of behaviour; one flaw, if it fits.
  4. Interests, or what the person does.
  5. Ending: what you think of them and why you value them.

A model charakterystyka (163 words)

Looks take two sentences, and every trait has its example. The view comes last. The text is ours, not a paper's.
