How to write an esej in Polish: a school essay for the B1 and B2 exam

Published 29 October 2026

A school essay (esej szkolny) sets out your views and reflections on the subject in the title. You open with a question or a common opinion, develop two or three thoughts with examples — best from your own life — and end with a conclusion. An essay does not have to prove anything; that is what sets it apart from a rozprawka, which defends one thesis with arguments.

In short

  • Four parts: a title, an opening question, two or three thoughts with examples, a conclusion.
  • The first person and examples from life belong here; sentences off the subject do not.
  • In the state exam: at B1 — on 6 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 160–170 words; at B2 — on 4 of the 9 papers in the library, as the long text, 250–270 words.

The regulation explains that it means a school essay: a form in which the writer sets out views, reasoning or reflections on a given subject. The papers add "wypracowanie szkolne" in brackets and give the title — "Zwierzę w domu", "Człowiek uczy się przez całe życie".

When does this form come up in the exam?

  • At B1 — on 6 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 160–170 words
  • At B2 — on 4 of the 9 papers in the library, as the long text, 250–270 words

In the state exam's writing part you write two texts — a short one and a long one — from one of three sets to choose from, so you never have to pick this form. The paper prints three criteria for the whole part: task, range and accuracy — 30 points at B1 and 40 at B2 for both texts together. How that splits between the texts, the Commission does not publish. The whole writing part is described on writing.

How do you write an esej, step by step?

  1. Title: copy the brief's, or give your own if the brief asks for it.
  2. Opening: a common opinion or the question the subject raises — "Często słyszy się, że…", "Zastanawiam się, czy…".
  3. Body: two or three thoughts, each in its own paragraph, each with an example.
  4. The other side: one thought that shows the subject differently — "Z drugiej strony…".
  5. Ending: a conclusion in one or two sentences that returns to the title.

Pamiętam mój pierwszy wyjazd do Polski.

Podsumowując, książki dają wiedzę, a podróże — odwagę, żeby z niej korzystać. Dziś wiem, że potrzebuję jednego i drugiego. Dlatego w każde wakacje jadę tam, gdzie nikt nie mówi moim językiem.

A question in the opening, a thought with an example from life, the other side, and a conclusion that returns to the title. The text is ours, not a paper's.

Common questions

How is an esej different from a rozprawka?

An esej sets out reflections and may leave them open. A rozprawka defends one thesis with arguments and must reach a conclusion.

Can an esej use the first person?

Yes. A school essay is your views, so "uważam", "pamiętam", "dziś wiem" belong.

How do you split an esej into paragraphs?

An opening, each thought in its own paragraph, an ending. The model above has four.
