How to write a private letter or e-mail to a friend in Polish: an exam model

Published 29 October 2026

A private letter (list prywatny) is an e-mail or a letter to a colleague, a friend, someone in the family. It has five parts: a greeting, why you are writing, the content, questions to the reader and a sign-off with your name. You write as "ty", relaxed but in full sentences. What matters most in the exam: the brief usually lists several things — describe, tell, suggest — and every one has to be in the text.

In short

  • Five parts: greeting, why you write, content (everything the brief asks for), questions to the reader, sign-off.
  • "Ty" form, with "Ty", "Ci", "Cię" capitalised as a courtesy; full sentences, not chat shorthand.
  • In the state exam: at B1 — on 8 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 150–175 words; at B2 — on 5 of the 9 papers in the library, as the short or the long text, 40–150 words.

The regulation lists an "informal private letter" at B1 and B2 next to the formal one. On the papers it is most often an e-mail to a friend from Poland: about a holiday, a move, a course, a birthday, a new job. telc has its own letter with a different brief — see the telc letter.

When does this form come up in the exam?

  • At B1 — on 8 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 150–175 words
  • At B2 — on 5 of the 9 papers in the library, as the short or the long text, 40–150 words

In the state exam's writing part you write two texts — a short one and a long one — from one of three sets to choose from, so you never have to pick this form. The paper prints three criteria for the whole part: task, range and accuracy — 30 points at B1 and 40 at B2 for both texts together. How that splits between the texts, the Commission does not publish. The whole writing part is described on writing.

How do you write a private letter, step by step?

  1. Greeting: "Cześć Kasiu!", "Droga Kasiu,", "Kochani,". After a comma carry on in lower case, after an exclamation mark with a capital.
  2. Why you write: "Piszę, bo…", "Dzięki za Twój e-mail".
  3. Content: each point of the brief in its own paragraph.
  4. Questions to the reader: "A co u Ciebie?", a suggestion to meet.
  5. Sign-off and name: "Ściskam mocno", "Buziaki", "Do usłyszenia!".

A model e-mail to a friend (161 words)

Ola

Every part of the brief has its paragraph: the flat, the move, furnishing, the invitation. The text is ours, not a paper's. The state exam's whole writing part is on writing in the state exam.
