How to describe a place in Polish: a model opis for the B1 and B2 exam
Published 29 October 2026
A description (opis) shows a place so the reader can see it. You start with what the place is and where, give the overall picture, then go into detail in a fixed order — from the door inwards, from left to right. You add what you sense: smells, sounds, the atmosphere. You end with what the place means to you.
In short
- Five parts: what and where, the overall picture, details in spatial order, the senses, what it means to you.
- Words of place lead the reader: na środku, po lewej stronie, w głębi, naprzeciwko.
- In the state exam: at B1 — on 3 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 170–175 words; at B2 — on 1 of the 9 papers in the library, as the short text, 140 words.
The regulation lists at B1 the description of a person, an object, a place and a situation; B2 adds a landscape. On the papers in the library the description is always of a place: a home after renovation, a dream city, a place to rest, a Polish town. Describing a person's character with a judgement is another form — the character sketch.
When does this form come up in the exam?
- At B1 — on 3 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 170–175 words
- At B2 — on 1 of the 9 papers in the library, as the short text, 140 words
In the state exam's writing part you write two texts — a short one and a long one — from one of three sets to choose from, so you never have to pick this form. The paper prints three criteria for the whole part: task, range and accuracy — 30 points at B1 and 40 at B2 for both texts together. How that splits between the texts, the Commission does not publish. The whole writing part is described on writing.
How do you describe a place, step by step?
- Opening: what the place is and where.
- The overall picture: first impression, size, style.
- Details in a fixed order: from the door inwards or left to right — "na środku", "po lewej", "w głębi".
- Impressions: smells, sounds, people, the atmosphere.
- Ending: what the place means to you.

W kawiarni zawsze pachnie kawą i cynamonem. Z głośników płynie cicha muzyka, a właścicielka zna wszystkich stałych gości po imieniu. Wieczorem nad każdym stolikiem zapalają się małe lampki. Panuje tu spokojna, rodzinna atmosfera.
The reader walks from the street, through the door, into the room — and only at the end learns why the writer keeps coming back. The café and the text are made up, not from a paper. Prepositions of place are in w or na.
