Polish prepositions of place: w or na, do or na?

Published 29 October 2026

Places fall into two groups. Buildings, cities and countries take "w" (where?) and "do" (where to?): w banku, do banku, w Krakowie, do Krakowa. Open spaces, events and some institutions take "na" for both: na poczcie, na pocztę, na koncercie, na koncert. Where from? — almost always "z": z banku, z poczty. You go "do" a person and are "u" them: do lekarza, u lekarza.

In short

  • Where: w + locative / na + locative. Where to: do + genitive / na + accusative. Where from: z + genitive.
  • "Na" goes with events (koncert, lekcja), open places (plaża, rynek) and some institutions (poczta, dworzec, uniwersytet) — these have to be learnt.
  • In the state B1 exam prepositions have a task of their own — no. 8 of the grammar part, 5 gaps, 2.5 points on each of the 14 papers.

Where, where to, where from

One preposition does not cover all three questions. "Gdzie jesteś?" — w sklepie. "Dokąd idziesz?" — do sklepu. "Skąd wracasz?" — ze sklepu. With "na" only the case changes: na poczcie (where), na pocztę (where to), z poczty (where from).

When "w" and "do"?

With closed places — buildings and rooms — and with cities and most countries.

When "na"?

With events (na koncercie, na lekcji, na spotkaniu), open places (na plaży, na rynku, na placu) and some institutions you simply learn: na poczcie, na dworcu, na lotnisku, na uniwersytecie, na policji. A few countries take "na" too: na Węgrzech, na Litwie, na Łotwie, na Słowacji.

You study w szkole but na uniwersytecie; you are w pracy but na zebraniu. The B1 list of grammar points gives its own example: "Anita mieszka w Gdańsku. Spotkamy się na placu Centralnym".

Nad morze, u lekarza

To water: nad morzem (where), nad morze (where to), znad morza (where from). To people: u lekarza (where), do lekarza (where to), od lekarza (where from). "U" also means "at someone's home": "Mieszkam u babci".
