How to write a complaint in Polish: skarga and reklamacja, a B2 model
Published 29 October 2026
A skarga and a reklamacja are built the same way: a greeting, what the matter is (the service, the date, the contract number), what went wrong, what you expect and by when, a sign-off. A reklamacja is about goods or a service you paid for — you demand a repair, a replacement or your money back. A skarga is about how you were treated — you write to that person's superior.
In short
- In the state B2 exam a complaint is a writing task on 3 of the 9 papers in the library (2 skarga, 1 reklamacja), at 130–150 words. At B1 it appears on none of the 14.
- Five parts: greeting, matter, the problem, a demand with a deadline, sign-off.
- Formal register: "Szanowni Państwo", "Państwo" throughout, "Z poważaniem".
Skarga or reklamacja?
A reklamacja is a claim against a seller or a company: the goods are faulty or the service was done badly, so you want a repair, a replacement, a discount or a refund. A skarga is about conduct or service — a rude adviser, an unprofessional guide — and goes to someone higher up: the director, the manager. On the B2 papers the brief uses the word, so you know which one to write.
When does a complaint come up in the exam?
At B2 on 3 of the 9 papers in the library: a complaint to a bank's director about an adviser, a complaint to a travel agency about the programme and the guide, a reklamacja e-mail about a renovation. The brief asks for 130–150 words. The paper prints three criteria for the whole B2 writing part: task (10 points), range (16) and accuracy (14) — 40 for both texts. At B1 there is no complaint on any of the 14 papers; the writing part of both exams is described on writing.
How do you build a complaint, step by step?
- Greeting: "Szanowni Państwo," or "Szanowny Panie Dyrektorze," — after the comma, carry on in lower case.
- Matter: what the letter is about — the service, the date, the contract or order number.
- Problem: what exactly went wrong, and what you have already done to fix it.
- Demand: what you expect — a refund, a repair, an apology — and by when.
- Sign-off: "Z poważaniem" and your name.
Address the reader as "Państwo", or "Pan", "Pani" with a third-person verb — "Państwa firma", "proszę Pana o…". Polite forms are covered in Pan, Pani, Państwo.

A model reklamacja (140 words)
Do wiadomości dołączam wyniki pomiarów prędkości z ostatnich dwóch tygodni.
Proszę o pisemną odpowiedź w ciągu 14 dni.
Z poważaniem
Anna Nowak
Each part is where it belongs: the matter in the first paragraph, the facts in the second, the demand with its deadline in the third. The text is ours, not a paper's.
