How to write a sprawozdanie (report) in Polish: a model for B1 and B2

Published 29 October 2026

A sprawozdanie (relacja, an account) reports how an event went: what took place, where and when, who organised it, what happened in order and what it was like. You write in the past tense, in the order of events, and end with a short verdict. In the exam it is usually a piece for a newspaper or a website — a concert, a festival, a fair, a course, a trip.

In short

  • Five parts: a title, an opening (what, where, when, who), events in order, the high point, a verdict.
  • The past tense and sequencing words: najpierw, następnie, potem, na zakończenie.
  • In the state exam: at B1 — on 6 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 150–175 words; at B2 — on 4 of the 9 papers in the library, as the long text, 150–180 words.

The regulation explains what it means at B1: relating how something went, a trip or a holiday for instance. The papers mostly ask for a "sprawozdanie (relację)" from a concert, a festival, a course or an exhibition — for a paper, a website or a school newsletter.

When does this form come up in the exam?

  • At B1 — on 6 of the 14 papers in the library, as the long text, 150–175 words
  • At B2 — on 4 of the 9 papers in the library, as the long text, 150–180 words

In the state exam's writing part you write two texts — a short one and a long one — from one of three sets to choose from, so you never have to pick this form. The paper prints three criteria for the whole part: task, range and accuracy — 30 points at B1 and 40 at B2 for both texts together. How that splits between the texts, the Commission does not publish. The whole writing part is described on writing.

How do you write a sprawozdanie, step by step?

  1. Title: the event's name — "Festiwal Smaków na Rynku".
  2. Opening: what, where, when and who organised it.
  3. Events in order, in the past tense, with "najpierw", "następnie", "potem".
  4. The high point: what impressed you most and why.
  5. Ending: a short verdict — was it worth it, what could be better.

Muzycy grali tradycyjne melodie z Lubelszczyzny i uczyli publiczność prostych kroków. Ludzie tańczyli na środku Rynku do późnej nocy. Szkoda tylko, że przy stoiskach trzeba było długo czekać w kolejce.

Moim zdaniem festiwal był bardzo udany: atmosfera była rodzinna, a organizacja — poza kolejkami — dobra. Już czekam na kolejną edycję!

The opening answers what, where, when and who; the events come in order; the verdict is short and at the end. The text is ours, not a paper's.
