Polish personal pronouns: mi or mnie, go or jego, niego?
Published 29 October 2026
A Polish personal pronoun can have three forms in one case: "go", "jego" and "niego". The short one ("mi", "cię", "go", "mu") is for an unstressed pronoun: "Daj mi klucze", "Widzę go". The full one ("mnie", "ciebie", "jego", "jemu") goes at the start of a sentence and in a contrast: "Jemu to daj, nie mnie". After a preposition, third-person pronouns start with n-: "do niego", "z nią", "dla nich".
In short
- The short form when unstressed (Pomogę ci. Widzę go.), the full one at the start of a sentence and in a contrast (Ciebie szukam, nie jego).
- After a preposition: on, ona, ono, oni, one take n- (do niego, z nią, o nich); ja and ty take the full form (dla ciebie, ze mną).
- "Jego", "jej", "ich" meaning "whose?" never take n-: "u jego brata", but "u niego".
How do personal pronouns decline?
Where a cell holds two or three forms, the first is full, the second short, and the n- form follows a preposition. Pronouns have no vocative.
| Nominative | Genitive | Dative | Accusative | Instrumental | Locative |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ja | mnie | mnie, mi | mnie | mną | mnie |
| ty | ciebie, cię | tobie, ci | ciebie, cię | tobą | tobie |
| on | jego, go, niego | jemu, mu, niemu | jego, go, niego | nim | nim |
| ona | jej, niej | jej, niej | ją, nią | nią | niej |
| ono | jego, go, niego | jemu, mu, niemu | je, nie | nim | nim |
| my | nas | nam | nas | nami | nas |
| wy | was | wam | was | wami | was |
| oni | ich, nich | im, nim | ich, nich | nimi | nich |
| one | ich, nich | im, nim | je, nie | nimi | nich |
Mi or mnie, go or jego?
A short form cannot open a sentence or carry stress: "Pomóż mi", "Kocham cię", "Dam mu znać". The full one is for emphasis and contrast: "Mnie się to podoba, tobie nie", "Jego zapytaj". In the accusative and genitive "ja" has only "mnie" — "Nie widzisz mnie?" — so the choice between "mi" and "mnie" is a dative one.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| mi, ci, mu, cię, go | Daj mi klucze. Widzę go. Pomogę ci. |
| mnie, tobie, jemu, ciebie, jego | Jemu to daj, nie mnie. Ciebie szukam. |
| niego, niej, nim, nich | Idę do niego. Rozmawiam z nią. To dla nich. |
| jego, jej, ich (czyj?) | Mieszkam u jego brata. To jej dom. Znam ich dzieci. |
When "niego", "nią", "nich"?
Always after a preposition, in the third person: do niego, od niej, z nimi, o nich, dla niego, przez nią, na nie. Without a preposition there is no n-: "Widzę ją", but "Czekam na nią". The first and second persons have no n- form and take the full one after a preposition: "do mnie", "z tobą", "dla ciebie". Before "mną" some prepositions gain an -e: ze mną, przede mną, nade mną.
"Jego", "jej" and "ich" are possessives too — they answer "whose?". Then there is no n-, even after a preposition: "u niego" (at his place), but "u jego brata" (at his brother's); "z nią", but "z jej siostrą".
Swój or jego?
"Swój" points back to the subject. "Marek odwiedził swoją mamę" — Marek's mother. "Marek odwiedził jego mamę" — somebody else's, someone mentioned earlier. In the third person the difference changes the meaning. With "ja" and "ty" both are correct: "Biorę swój parasol" and "Biorę mój parasol".
Where are pronouns in the exam?
The state exam's list of grammar points names the declension of personal, demonstrative, possessive ("swój" included) and interrogative pronouns at A2 and B1; B1 adds "ktoś", "nikt" and the reflexive "siebie", B2 "jakiś", "każdy", "żaden". At B1, on each of the 14 papers in the library, task 1 of the grammar part is choosing the form of a noun, adjective or pronoun: 10 gaps, 5 points. What each case does is in cases; polite "pan", "pani" in Pan, Pani, Państwo.
