Polish verbs: conjugation, tenses and aspect — tables and exercises before the B1 exam

Published 17 October 2026

In the present tense a verb follows the endings of its "ja" and "ty" forms, the past is built from the infinitive with -ł-, and the future depends on aspect: "będę czytać" but "przeczytam". Below are tables for each step, the irregular verbs and exercises with answers — as far as the B1 grammar list goes.

In short

  • The "ja" and "ty" forms show how the whole verb goes: czytam, czytasz — czytają; piszę, piszesz — piszą; mówię, mówisz — mówią.
  • A perfective verb has no present tense: "przeczytam" is already the future. An imperfective verb builds its future with "będę".
  • In the state B1 exam, tenses are task 4 of the grammar block (10 gaps you fill in yourself), and aspect and moods are task 7 (10 gaps).

How do you conjugate a verb in the present?

Look at the "ja" and "ty" forms — they give the pattern, and the other forms follow it. The infinitive does not always tell you: pisać gives "piszę", czytać gives "czytam", though both end in -ać.

Pattern (ja, ty)Exampleja, ty, on/ona, my, wy, oni

A few common verbs have to be learnt by heart:

Verbja, ty, on/ona, my, wy, oni
byćjestem, jesteś, jest, jesteśmy, jesteście, są
miećmam, masz, ma, mamy, macie, mają
iśćidę, idziesz, idzie, idziemy, idziecie, idą
jechaćjadę, jedziesz, jedzie, jedziemy, jedziecie, jadą
chciećchcę, chcesz, chce, chcemy, chcecie, chcą
mócmogę, możesz, może, możemy, możecie, mogą
jeśćjem, jesz, je, jemy, jecie, jedzą
wiedziećwiem, wiesz, wie, wiemy, wiecie, wiedzą
braćbiorę, bierzesz, bierze, bierzemy, bierzecie, biorą

How do you form the past tense?

Take -ć off the infinitive and add -ł- with an ending for gender and person: robić → robił → robiłem. In the plural the form depends on whether the group includes at least one man: "oni robili", "one robiły".

Personm. / masculine-personalf., n. / non-masculine-personal
jarobiłemrobiłam
tyrobiłeśrobiłaś
on / ona / onorobiłrobiła / robiło
myrobiliśmyrobiłyśmy
wyrobiliścierobiłyście
oni / onerobilirobiły

Verbs in -eć take -eli in the masculine-personal form: mieć — mieli, chcieć — chcieli, widzieć — widzieli. It is a frequent mistake in writing: "mieli", not "miali".

Verbononaonija (m. / f.)

miećmiałmiałamielimiałem / miałam
chciećchciałchciałachcielichciałem / chciałam
wziąćwziąłwzięławzięliwziąłem / wzięłam

How do you form the future tense?

It depends on aspect. An imperfective verb forms a compound future: "będę" with the infinitive or with the -ł form — both are correct and both are on the B1 list. A perfective verb has a simple future: you conjugate it like the present, and it means the future.

Personimperfective: czytaćperfective: przeczytać
jabędę czytać / będę czytał(a)przeczytam
tybędziesz czytać / będziesz czytał(a)przeczytasz
on / onabędzie czytać / będzie czytał(a)przeczyta
mybędziemy czytać / będziemy czytali (czytały)przeczytamy
wybędziecie czytać / będziecie czytali (czytały)przeczytacie
oni / onebędą czytać / będą czytali (czytały)przeczytają

Aspect: when imperfective, when perfective?

The imperfective is about the activity — it lasts, repeats, may not be finished: "Marek czytał książkę przez dwie godziny". The perfective is about the result or one completed event: "Marek przeczytał całą książkę". The words around help: codziennie, często, zawsze, długo go with the imperfective; już, wreszcie, nagle with the perfective.

spotykać sięspotkać się
  • Most often the perfective takes a prefix: na-, prze-, z-, po-, u- (pisać — napisać, czytać — przeczytać).
  • Some pairs differ in the suffix: kupować — kupić, wracać — wrócić, otwierać — otworzyć.
  • A few pairs are different words: brać — wziąć, mówić — powiedzieć. Learn them as pairs.

The conditional and the imperative

The conditional is the past form with "by": zrobiłbym / zrobiłabym, zrobiłbyś / zrobiłabyś, zrobiłby / zrobiłaby, zrobilibyśmy / zrobiłybyśmy, zrobilibyście / zrobiłybyście, zrobiliby / zrobiłyby. After "gdyby" comes the -ł form: "Gdybyśmy mieli czas, pojechalibyśmy w góry".

The imperative usually comes from the third-person present (czyta → czytaj, mówi → mów, zrobi → zrób). For other persons there is "niech": "Niech pan usiądzie", "Niech oni zaczekają".

Where are verbs in the exam?

The B1 grammar list names the present, the past of both aspects, the simple and compound future in both forms, the imperative and the conditional, and aspect including forming perfectives. In the state B1 exam two tasks of the grammar block test them. In task 4 you write the form of the verb in brackets yourself (10 gaps, 5 points): on 8 papers it is the present and the past, on 6 the present and the future. In task 7 you choose the form: aspect and moods (10 gaps, 5 points).

The eight tasks of the state B1 grammar block, the same on 14 papers. Verbs are tasks 4 and 7.

Task 4 gives no hint: the form has to be exact, person and gender ending included. The whole block is described in state B1 grammar; noun endings in Polish cases.

Common questions

How do you tell how a verb conjugates?

From the "ja" and "ty" forms: -am/-asz, -em/-esz, -ę/-esz, -ę/-isz or -ę/-ysz. A dictionary gives them beside the verb.

Are "będę czytać" and "będę czytał" the same?

Yes, both forms of the compound future are correct and both are on the B1 list.

Does a perfective verb have a present tense?

No. "Przeczytam", "kupię", "zrobię" look like the present but mean the future.

When is the past -li and when -ły?

-li when the group includes at least one man ("oni robili"); -ły in every other case ("one robiły", "dzieci robiły").
