Polish numerals: tables, dates, times and exercises before the B1 exam

Published 17 October 2026

Three things decide a numeral's form: which number comes before the noun (1, 2–4, or 5 and up), the gender (dwa, dwie or dwaj), and the case the sentence calls for. Below is each in a table, then dates and times, and at the end exercises with answers.

In short

  • After 2–4 (and 22–24, 32–34…) the noun is nominative plural: dwa lata. After 5–21 (and 25–31…) it is genitive plural: pięć lat, dwadzieścia jeden lat.
  • With men the numeral has forms of its own: dwaj studenci or dwóch studentów, pięciu studentów.
  • At B1 the grammar list names declining cardinal and ordinal numerals, and the topic catalogue lists age, dates, times, prices and quantities.

Which form of the noun follows a number?

The last digit decides, except for 12–14. After 1, the nominative singular. After 2, 3, 4 and numbers ending in them (22, 33, 104), the nominative plural. After 5–21 and numbers ending in 5–9, 0 or 1 (25, 30, 41), the genitive plural. Hence "dwadzieścia jeden lat" but "dwadzieścia dwa lata".

The noun after a number: 1, then 2–4 and numbers ending in 2–4, then 5–21 and the rest.

With the genitive plural the verb is singular, and neuter in the past: "Pięć osób czeka", "Przyszło pięć osób". After 2–4 the verb is plural: "Trzy osoby czekają".

Dwa, dwie or dwaj?

The numerals 2–4 have a feminine form (dwie) and a separate one for men. With a group of men there are two correct ways: "dwaj studenci przyszli" or "dwóch studentów przyszło" — with the second the verb is singular. From five up only one is left: "pięciu studentów".

How do numerals decline?

A numeral takes a case too: "od dwóch lat", "z trzema kolegami", "po pięciu minutach". The forms in brackets are for men. Jeden declines like an adjective: jeden, jednego, jednemu, z jednym.

Casedwa (m., n.)dwie (f.)dwaj (m.-pers.)trzypięć
Mdwadwiedwaj / dwóchtrzy (trzej)pięć (pięciu)
Ddwóchdwóchdwóchtrzechpięciu

Bdwadwiedwóchtrzy (trzech)pięć (pięciu)
Ndwomadwiemadwomatrzemapięcioma
Ms(o) dwóch(o) dwóch(o) dwóch(o) trzech(o) pięciu

In the feminine instrumental "dwoma" is also correct beside "dwiema", and in the dative "dwom" beside "dwóm".

Ordinal numerals

Ordinals decline like adjectives: "na trzecim piętrze", "w pierwszej klasie", "drugiego dnia". In compound numbers both parts decline: "dwudziesty pierwszy", "dwudziestego pierwszego".

How do you say dates?

The day is a masculine ordinal and the month is genitive: stycznia, lutego, marca, kwietnia, maja, czerwca, lipca, sierpnia, września, października, listopada, grudnia. To "which day?" you answer in the nominative — "Dzisiaj jest dwudziesty drugi czerwca". To "when?" in the genitive: "Egzamin jest dwudziestego drugiego czerwca".

  • The year: "w dwa tysiące dwudziestym szóstym roku" — only the last words are locative.
  • A month without a day: "w czerwcu", "w październiku".
  • A date of birth on a form: "urodzony / urodzona trzeciego maja".

How do you tell the time?

An hour is a feminine ordinal, because "godzina" stands behind it: "Jest siódma". To "o której?" (at what time?) you answer with "o" and the locative: "o siódmej". Timetables, radio and offices count to 24: "o siedemnastej trzydzieści".

TimeKtóra jest godzina?O której?
7:00siódmao siódmej
7:15siódma piętnaście / kwadrans po siódmejo siódmej piętnaście
7:30siódma trzydzieści / wpół do ósmejo wpół do ósmej
7:45siódma czterdzieści pięć / za kwadrans ósmaza kwadrans ósma
17:30siedemnasta trzydzieścio siedemnastej trzydzieści

Where are numerals in the exam?

The regulation's grammar list takes them through the levels. At A2, ordinals and cardinals in the nominative, genitive and accusative. At B1, declining ordinals and cardinals, with "czterej, czterech" for men. At B2, dates, compound and indefinite numerals (kilku, kilkunastu) are added.

The B1 topic catalogue lists age, date of birth, times, measures and quantities, and money — so numbers turn up in listening, in reading and in the text you write. The cases a numeral calls for are in Polish cases, the verb after a numeral in Polish verbs.

Common questions

Why "dwadzieścia dwa lata" but "dwadzieścia jeden lat"?

The last digit counts: 2–4 give the nominative plural (lata), a final 1 in a compound number and 5–9 the genitive (lat).

Both are correct. With "dwaj" the verb is plural (przyszli), with "dwóch" singular (przyszło).

How do you say a date in the exam?

The day as an ordinal, the month in the genitive: "trzeciego maja", "dwudziestego drugiego czerwca".

What does "wpół do ósmej" mean?

7:30 — half an hour before eight.
