The Polish conditional: gdybym, chciałbym (with exercises)
Published 3 November 2026
You form the Polish conditional from the past tense: add "by" and a personal ending — chciał → chciałbym, chciała → chciałabyś, chcieli → chcielibyśmy. After "gdyby", "żeby" and "aby" the ending moves onto the conjunction and the verb stays in the past: "Gdybym miał czas, pojechałbym".
In short
- Endings after "by": -m (ja), -ś (ty), none (on, ona, oni), -śmy (my), -ście (wy): zrobiłbym, zrobiłabyś, zrobiliby, zrobilibyśmy.
- After "gdyby" comes just the past form: "Gdybyś wiedział" — not "Gdybyś wiedziałbyś".
- At state B1, in task 7 of the grammar part, a conditional form was the right answer in 51 of 140 gaps across 14 papers, and one was offered in 134 of them.
How do you form the conditional?
- Take the third-person past form in the gender and number you need: zrobił, zrobiła, zrobili, zrobiły.
- Add "by": zrobiłby, zrobiłaby, zrobiliby.
- For "ja", "ty", "my", "wy" add an ending after "by": -m, -ś, -śmy, -ście.
| Person | masc. / masc.-personal | fem., neut. / non-masc.-personal |
|---|---|---|
| ja | zrobiłbym | zrobiłabym |
| ty | zrobiłbyś | zrobiłabyś |
| on / ona / ono | zrobiłby | zrobiłaby / zrobiłoby |
| my | zrobilibyśmy | zrobiłybyśmy |
| wy | zrobilibyście | zrobiłybyście |
| oni / one | zrobiliby | zrobiłyby |
Every stem change from the past tense carries over: mieli, not "miali"; mógł but mogła. Know the past tense and you know the conditional — the rules are in the past tense.
| Infinitive | on | ona | oni |
|---|---|---|---|
| mieć | miałby | miałaby | mieliby |
| chcieć | chciałby | chciałaby | chcieliby |
| móc | mógłby | mogłaby | mogliby |
| iść | szedłby | szłaby | szliby |
| wziąć | wziąłby | wzięłaby | wzięliby |
| być | byłby | byłaby | byliby |
When is it used?
- A polite request or question: "Chciałbym zapytać…", "Czy mógłby pan powtórzyć?". That is how many of the exam's letters and e-mails open — see the formal letter.
- A wish or a dream: "Chętnie pojechałabym do Gdańska".
- Advice: "Na twoim miejscu zapisałbym się na kurs".
- A condition that did not happen or is unlikely: "Gdybym miał samochód, przyjechałbym".
"By" with its ending can also go before the verb: "Chętnie bym pojechała" means the same as "Chętnie pojechałabym".
How do you build a sentence with "gdyby"?
In the "gdyby" half the personal ending attaches to "gdyby" and the verb is an ordinary past form. The other half has the full conditional.
| Person | Condition | Result |
|---|---|---|
| ja | gdybym miał / miała | pojechałbym / pojechałabym |
| ty | gdybyś miał / miała | pojechałbyś / pojechałabyś |
| on / ona | gdyby miał / miała | pojechałby / pojechałaby |
| my | gdybyśmy mieli / miały | pojechalibyśmy / pojechałybyśmy |
| wy | gdybyście mieli / miały | pojechalibyście / pojechałybyście |
| oni / one | gdyby mieli / miały | pojechaliby / pojechałyby |
The most common mistake is "by" twice in one half of the sentence: "Gdybym miałbym" is wrong. "Gdybym miał" is all it takes.
"Gdyby" is for something possible or unreal. A real condition takes "jeśli" or "jeżeli" with the present or the future: "Jeśli będzie ładnie, pójdziemy na spacer". "Żeby" and "aby" work like "gdyby": "Mama chce, żebym zadzwonił", "Uczę się, aby zdać egzamin".
Where is the conditional in the exam?
The state exam's list of grammar points has the conditional from A2 ("chciałbym, oglądałby, kupiłyby, zrobilibyście"), at B1 ("napisalibyście, przeczytałbyś") and at B2 ("przyniósłbym, zaczęlibyśmy, wzięłabym, mógłbyś"). At B1 the conjunctions include "gdyby …, to …", and at B2 the list names conditional sentences outright — real, possible and unreal ("Gdybym wiosną więcej pracował, skończyłbym już pracę magisterską…").
At B1, on each of the 14 papers in the library, task 7 of the grammar part is "aspect and moods": 10 gaps, 5 points, and in each gap you choose one of three forms. A conditional form is among the options in 134 of 140 gaps, but it was the right answer in 51 — the rest are the indicative or the imperative. "Gdyby" appears in that task's text on 12 of the 14 papers.
