The Polish past tense: endings table and exercises (B1)

Published 3 November 2026

You form the Polish past tense from the infinitive: cut the -ć, add -ł- and an ending for person and gender — robić → robił, robiła, robiłem, robiłaś. In the plural you choose between -li and -ły: "oni robili" if the group has at least one man in it, "one robiły" in every other case.

In short

  • Endings: -łem / -łam (ja), -łeś / -łaś (ty), -ł / -ła / -ło (on, ona, ono), -liśmy / -łyśmy (my), -liście / -łyście (wy), -li / -ły (oni, one).
  • Verbs in -eć have -ał- in the singular and -el- in the masculine-personal plural: miał but mieli; chciał but chcieli.
  • On 8 of the 14 B1 state-exam papers, task 4 of the grammar part is "present and past": 41 of its 80 answers are past forms, 21 of them plural.

How do you form the past tense?

Take the infinitive, cut the -ć and add -ł- followed by an ending: zrobić → zrobi- → zrobił. The rule is the same for imperfective verbs (robić → robiłem) and perfective ones (zrobić → zrobiłem) — aspect changes the meaning, not the endings.

"Się" stays a separate word and usually follows the verb: "zgubił się", "nauczyliśmy się", "umyło się".

Why does "ja" have two forms?

In the past tense the verb shows gender in the first and second person too: a man says "byłem", a woman "byłam"; to a man you say "byłeś", to a woman "byłaś". The present has no such difference ("jestem"), which is why it is an easy one to get wrong in writing. In a task on the paper, the text decides the gender: who is speaking, or to whom.

When -li and when -ły?

The masculine-personal form (-li) is used when the group includes at least one man: "Anna i Piotr przyszli". The non-masculine-personal form (-ły) is for groups of women only, children, animals and things: "Dziewczyny przyszły", "Dzieci spały", "Książki leżały na stole".

Before -li a vowel or consonant often changes. Verbs in -eć have -ał- in the singular and -el- in the masculine-personal plural:

chciećchciałchciałachcielichciały
widziećwidziałwidziaławidzieliwidziały
wiedziećwiedziałwiedziaławiedzieliwiedziały
musiećmusiałmusiałamusielimusiały

In writing this is the table's most common trap: "mieli", "chcieli", "widzieli" — not "miali", "chciali", "widziali".

Which forms do you learn by heart?

Some common verbs have a different stem in the past than in the infinitive. In the masculine an "o" often becomes "ó" (mógł — mogła, niósł — niosła), and in verbs in -ąć "ą" becomes "ę" (wziął — wzięła).

Robiłem or zrobiłem?

The imperfective is about the activity: it went on, it repeated, or it is not said whether it finished — "Wczoraj czytałam książkę". The perfective is about the result — "Wczoraj przeczytałam całą książkę". Aspect pairs and how they are formed are in verbs.

Where is the past tense in the exam?

The state exam's list of grammar points has the past tense of imperfective and perfective verbs from A1 ("słuchałem, napisałaś, zrobiliśmy, umyłyśmy"). A2 and B1 give the same examples ("leżały, kupowali, poszłam, zjadłeś, umyło się"); B2 adds harder stems ("zaczęły, ciął, urósł").

At B1, task 4 of the grammar part has 10 gaps for 5 points: you write the form of the verb in brackets yourself. On 8 of the 14 papers in the library it is present and past, on the rest present and future. On those 8 papers a past form is the answer in 41 of 80 gaps; 21 of them are plural, where you choose -li or -ły, and 7 are "ja" or "ty", where you choose the gender.

Common questions

Mieli or miali?

Mieli. Verbs in -eć take -el- in the masculine-personal plural: mieli, chcieli, widzieli; in the singular -ał-: miał, chciał.

How does a woman say "byłem"?

"Byłam". In the past tense a woman uses the endings -łam and -łaś, a man -łem and -łeś.

"Oni" or "one" for one man and five women?

"Oni" and the -li form: one man is enough to make the group masculine-personal.

From which level do you need the past tense?

The state exam's list of grammar points has it from A1, in both aspects.
